Hey everybody, welcome to this impromptu review!
We had mentioned a little while back that we would be partnering up with the premium dice subscription service Libris Arcana to help spread the word about their cool custom game dice.
As part of the deal, we receive one of their normal monthly dice sets AND they give us a code for a free set to give away to one of our listeners.
Well after a long wait (thanks snail mail, you really lived up to that name this time), our first month’s subscriber package finally arrived! We also got word from across the pond that our first giveaway winner received theirs as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by these dice. They look great, the swirled green and white pearl really pops, and kind of remind me of a vintage bowling ball.
The weight feels good as well. I’ve never purchased custom craft dice (which is what I’ll call these as opposed to mass produced retail dice) and was initially worried they might feel too light and cheap like the old school dice that used to be included in the 80s D&D box sets. These are not like that at all, they feel every bit as solid as mass produced dice sets if not more so.
The one thing I noticed was that the paint used to color in the numbers is kind of rough and uneven in a few spots. You can kind of see it clumping up on this d20
It seems somewhat chalky, and some of it had actually flaked off in the bag.
Looks like the 2 on this d4 was the biggest victim.
I think this is probably an issue with this particular paint lot or a transient problem with their painting equipment and not indicative of their overall quality because we also received a bonus d100 in this shipment and the yellow/gold paint used on this one looks perfect.
Overall, I’m excited about these dice. Aside from a minor paint issue they look slick and are definitely fancier than the plain solids I’ve had before.
If you’re someone that loves collecting dice sets, Libris Arcana’s subscription service is definitely worth it. You not only get a limited time exclusive design shipped right to your door every month, they even throw in some random stickers for good measure.
If you’re not the subscription type, or you’re just in the market for a single set, you can purchase some of their designs individually as well.
