Today we just received official confirmation of a new Star Wars spinoff show coming to Disney+.
If you have NOT finished watching The Mandalorian Season 2 finale yet and seen the post credits scene, turn back now shit is about to get full of **SPOILERS**!!!
Did you turn back? Last warning.
Ok. If you’re still here that means you’ve by now seen the post credits scene in the Mandalorian S2 Finale that aired last Friday….click below to keep reading…
In it, we see the newly revitalized Boba Fett post-Grogu rescue arriving very much unannounced at Jabba’s palace on Tatooine which apparently is now being run buy his longtime right hand man Bib Fortuna. It appears that old Bib has gotten fat (literally) on Jabba’s spoils and has been living the good life as head of the Tatooine syndicate (and perhaps gone a bit Howard Hughes judging by his 8 inch stripper nails).
After Fennec Shand clears a path through the Palace guards Bib offers Boba a surprised welcome home and feign relief at finding his old associate still alive.
Boba, no doubt still a bit sore at having been left for dead these past 5 years in the sands of Tatooine, doesn’t bother to let him finish and instead blows a hole through his chest.
The scene ends with Boba Fett parking his badass on the throne while Fennec helps herself to a drink. The pair appear to have just claimed Jabba’s Tatooine operation for themselves and we’re given a simple title card announcing The Book Of Boba Fett coming in 2021.
Since the recent Disney investor’s meeting failed to mention anything about a new Boba Fett show despite announcing dozens of new shows coming to the service, speculation began immediately. Would this be Mando S3? Would they be closing the book of Din Djarin and focusing on a new set of protagonists? Or was this to be a new stand alone spinoff show?
Well, this morning we got our answer. After a brief, premature leak from artist Paul Batmen yesterday, the official announcement came from Disney today. Yes this will be a separate show not Mando s3.
We also were treated to the new logo for the show, which couldn’t be more perfect
Now the question becomes, what exactly will this show be about? We know it will feature the same creative team of Filoni and Favreau (including Robert Rodriguez who directed the s2 episode featuring Boba armored up and unleashed for the first time post Jedi), and will be set within the Mando timeline, but, what will be the plot of the Book of Boba Fett?
Will this be the long talked about Bounty Hunter show? Could we follow Fett and a new crew (or possibly old crew….? They already have the assets for an IG puppet, just sayin) as they hunt the galaxy’s most wanted for fun and prizes?
Or will this be a revenge tale following Boba Fett’s ascension to crime lord and ultimately taking out any and all who he feels betrayed him and left him to rot in the sarlacc’s belly?
And what’s up with Shand? Are they a “thing” or simply business partners?
And where is Jabba’s son Rotta (A.k.a. Stinky the Hutt)? Shouldn’t he be in charge of his father’s empire now? Did Bib Fortuna already ice the kid? Or is he off controlling a different “family” in the hutt crime syndicate? If so, that could mean a confrontation with Fett sooner rather than later.
Which leads me to Mando S3. Now that the Fett question has been answered, what can we expect from a third season of the Mandalorian?
Grogu’s story was seemingly wrapped up in the s2 finale but it’s hard to imagine a situation where Disney allows that little money maker to disappear from the series for too long.
So will s3 give us glimpses of him training with Luke? What if Gideon escapes Republic custody? Will that force Mando to go searching for Luke and Grogu again to warn them of the danger?
It was pretty heavily implied in the Finale that Din could be joining Bo Katan and her fighters in their quest to retake Mandalore. This would be pretty logical given that he is now technically the ruler of Mandalore, having mistakenly taking that mantle by kicking Gideon’s ass up and down his cruiser and taking theDarksaber.
What we don’t know is how this new tension between Bo and Din will play out. She certainly wants no part of the saber if it is just given over without a fight, but will they really have to duke it out or is there a more amicable way they will be able to transition it to Bo that will satisfy both parties?
All I know for sure is that I’m ready for all of this to happen and I can’t wait for 2021 and beyond!
